Zipolite und die Umgebung

Zipolite

Zipolite is a unique destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast, known for its relaxed atmosphere, natural beauty, and free-spirited vibe. Located in the state of Oaxaca, this small beach town has become famous for its long shoreline with strong waves, spectacular sunsets, and its diverse community that attracts both international travelers and local visitors seeking authenticity and a chance to disconnect.

Unlike more developed tourist destinations, Zipolite has preserved its rustic and bohemian character. It is especially known for being Mexico’s only official nude beach, reinforcing its open-minded, inclusive, and unpretentious identity. Life here moves at a slower pace: yoga by the ocean, sunset walks, local and international cuisine, and a vibrant yet laid-back nightlife.

As for its history, Zipolite is believed to have originally been inhabited by Zapotec indigenous communities. For much of the 20th century, it remained an isolated place, until the 1960s and 1970s, when it began attracting alternative travelers and countercultural movements that deeply shaped its identity. In particular, the total solar eclipse of 1970 drew the hippie community to this beach, as it was considered one of the best places to observe it. From that moment on, Zipolite became a popular destination among backpackers. Over time, it evolved into an established tourist destination while still preserving its natural essence and spirit of freedom.

Today, Zipolite represents a balance between tradition, nature, and community — ideal for those seeking an authentic experience, far from mass tourism and closer to the rhythm of the sea.

WHAT TO DO IN ZIPOLITE?
  • Embrace the Art of Il Dolce Far Niente

Zipolite is the perfect place to slow down and simply enjoy life’s simple pleasures: lying in a hammock with a good book, sunbathing on the beach, swimming in the ocean (with caution, due to the strong waves and currents), strolling along the shore at sunset, sipping a cocktail while watching the waves, and ultimately enjoying the beauty of doing absolutely nothing.

  • Relax, Recharge & Treat Yourself

In Zipolite, you can join beachfront yoga classes, enjoy relaxing massages by the sea (for instance at CoZmO), participate in temazcal ceremonies or holistic rituals, meditate to the sound of the ocean, or even indulge in a facial or other wellness treatments.

  • A Touch of Nightlife

Zipolite also offers a lively yet laid-back nightlife scene. You’ll often find live music in bars and restaurants along the beach, especially around the “Callejón del Arte,” as well as spots like “Sin Nombre” and “Zanate.” There are drag shows at “La Máxima” and alternative bars such as “Uhuru,” known for its mezcal infusions and personalized craft cocktails.
You can enjoy a sunset drink at our seaside bar “CoZmO,” located next to the rock, or relax on the beach loungers at “El Bicho,” right in the middle of the bay. “Brazza” is also worth a visit for its artisanal mezcals, arguably the best margarita on the beach, and a truly unique ceviche.
Zipolite is a place where people from all over the world come together in an open and inclusive atmosphere. Throughout the year, different festivals bring even more energy and nightlife to town, including the Nude Festival at the end of January and “Zipolite Diverso” in May.

Zipolite is less about constantly doing things and more about experiencing life slowly and intentionally. Here, the best plan is often simply to surrender to the rhythm of the sea.

WHERE TO EAT?

Of course, no visit would be complete without the best coffee in town and a seaside breakfast at Lo Cósmico, or a tea and a delicious slice of cake at Café Samsara. But Zipolite also offers many other tasty and unique spots. Here are some of our favorites:

BREAKFAST

  • Órale Café
Very close to Lo Cósmico, on Calle Las Casitas. A small, relaxed spot with a simple and affordable menu. Not too many options, but consistently delicious. Try the sweet-and-savory breakfast combo.
  • Kellyko
Located on Andador Mangle, parallel to the main pedestrian street. A small local spot with plenty of options, especially Mexican breakfast dishes, coffee, juices, and breakfast combos with excellent value for money. #SupportLocal
  • Gula Gula
Sandwiches, omelets, and fresh fruit served right on the beach, next to the “El Bicho” bar. Relaxed atmosphere and delicious homemade sourdough bread. Enjoy breakfast with your feet in the sand, ocean views, and a fresh sea breeze.

LUNCH

  • Piedra de Fuego
Seafood in generous portions at moderate prices. Traditional and simple preparations served with rice, potatoes, and salad. Located at the end of Calle Mangle. #SupportLocal
  • Teófila’s
On the other side of town, next to the chapel, you’ll find Teo — one of Zipolite’s original residents — who has been delighting locals and travelers with her unforgettable cooking for decades. Try the seafood and traditional dishes with Teófila’s unique homemade flavor. Open from 1pm to 5pm. #SupportLocal
  • Orégano
Mexican food served in a colorful space inspired by Oaxacan folk art and crafts. Great variety, flavorful dishes, and fair prices. Located on Federal Highway 175, across from the entrance to Roca Blanca (Av. Pelícanos). #SupportLocal
  • Birria “Los Reyes”
Tacos, consommé, and quesabirrias with generous portions and incredible flavor. This food truck is located near the entrance to the pedestrian street, across from Piña Palmera on Av. Pelícanos.
  • Las Flores de Oaxaca
Oaxacan cuisine with a more refined and elevated approach. Located by the highway, prices are higher than average, but the quality is excellent, and you’ll find dishes that are hard to find elsewhere. On the corner of Av. Pelícanos and Federal Highway 175, almost directly across from Orégano.
  • Comedor Hei Tan
A traditional local diner serving freshly made food from the comal, handmade tortillas, and classic Mexican stews. A very simple roadside spot on Federal Highway 175 in Arroyo 3, close to Lo Cósmico. Very affordable prices and authentic home-style Mexican cooking.

DINNER

  • La Picaña
At the end of the main pedestrian street, this small and humble spot is usually packed thanks to its delicious food and fair prices. The menu is short but full of great choices. The choripán and picaña tacos are especially good.
  • La Fenice
The most authentic Italian pizzeria in Zipolite. Opening hours are limited, the pizzas are small (perfect for one person), and prices are on the higher side, but they’re absolutely worth it. Located at the beginning of the pedestrian street, across from San Cristóbal.
If you’re looking for other pizza options, Zipolite has many great pizzerias. Another favorite is “Sol y Luna,” owned by Nabor, right in the center of the pedestrian street, with more affordable prices and a good variety of pizza sizes and flavors.
  • Posada México
Right on the beach, not far from Lo Cósmico. They offer a variety of Italian-Mexican dishes, from seafood and grilled meats to pizzas. Great quality and flavor for a relaxed beachfront dinner.
  • Bacco
Located behind Lo Cósmico on Calle Las Casitas, this Italian restaurant offers a variety of high-quality dishes at moderate prices. The grilled meats are excellent, and they also serve great pizzas and ravioli. If you enjoy unusual desserts, try the “Dulcera” pizza — our personal favorite.
  • El Alquimista
Our neighbors on the beach. Probably the most romantic dinner spot in Zipolite. Prices are a bit high, but you’re paying not only for the food, but for the experience of dining by candlelight on the sand. The menu is extensive, with something for every taste. Perfect for a special evening.
  • Las Salsas
Tacos filled with delicious homemade stews and unforgettable flavors. Located inside the “Mercadito Playero” (across from Bar Sin Nombre). They offer both meat and vegan options, all at fair prices. And as the name suggests, there’s a huge variety of salsas to choose from — the hibiscus and tamarind ones are incredible, though the selection changes regularly.
  • Mr. Taco (November–April)
More traditional street tacos: suadero, tripe, cabeza, chicken, tongue, and more. Moderately priced for the area, with the classic Mexican street taco vibe. In our opinion, the best traditional tacos in Zipolite. Located by the park on the far side of town.
  • Salmastro
Also on the far side of town, right on the beach. A beautiful spot to watch the sunset and enjoy dinner by the ocean. They serve flavorful fusion dishes at reasonable prices. #SupportLocal

DESSERTS

Still craving something sweet? Don’t miss the chance to try delicious ice cream or popsicles from “Palma Negra,” located at the end of the pedestrian street. And if you’re in the mood for something chocolatey, we highly recommend the chocolate pie from the small artisanal bakery “Trigo,” across from Tutti Fruti — if you’re lucky enough to find one available!
